On our journey to "get real" with God, we have finally arrived at the "L" in real. Two "L" words stood out for me; the first being: learn. Getting real in our Christian walk should involve continual learning.
We Christians know that our lives are a continual process toward becoming perfect in Christ. We never arrive until we see Him in glory. However, there are several passages of scripture in which Paul warns Christians to stop being babies and grow up (my translation). In other words, we cannot be perfect here, but that is no excuse not to learn to become more Christ-like.
Manuals and textbooks can be found to learn anything from driving a car to making the perfect roast, or mastering Algebra or fixing your plumbing. Christians have the perfect textbook to follow called the Bible. I know, you want to shout a "well, duh" at me. Even the youngest believer knows the Bible is our instruction manual. Many children’s sermons have been given to teach that very truth.
However, allow me to get personal for a moment. When was the last time you read from your manual? Have you studied it today? When a problem arose, did you seek the Bible’s counsel? Has someone asked you where to find an answer in the Bible only to have you reply: "Well, I know it’s in there – just not chapter and book"? Do not worry. My toes are stinging from being stepped on too.
"There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another – showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us." (2 Timothy 3:15-17 The Message)
God has even given us the deposit of the Holy Spirit who aids us in deciphering what the scriptures mean and their application to our own lives.
Do not forget this important part of getting real in your Christian walk. Never stop learning- there is always more to know about the Lord and our relationship with Him.
